Reading Your ATF
*VERY EASY*
Automatic transmission fluid should be clear red or pink and nearly odorless. Compare the color of your transmission fluid with that of new fluid by placing several drops of each on a white cloth or white paper napkin. Wait 10 minutes. If your transmission fluid is noticeably darker than the new fluid and does not spread as much, your transmission fluid should be changed.
NEW AUTO. TRANSMISSION FLUIDLikewise, if your transmission fluid looks orange, brown or black, feels sticky, or smells burned, it has been overheated and should be changed. If it is gritty or silvery, some friction (clutch) material or band metal is breaking away. If the new fluid returns to these conditions, the transmission needs repair. In general, if the automatic transmission fluid is not a clear red (or pink), transmission service or repair is required.
